Hello, this is Ms. Harada from the IFCA Tokyo team.<\/span>\r\n\r\nI have an exciting event that <\/span><\/pre>\n
I would like to share with you...!<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe other day, I applied for the <\/span><\/pre>\n
\"Emergency Student Support Grant\"<\/span><\/pre>\n
 which is funded by the national <\/span><\/pre>\n
government in Japan.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWhat is the \"Emergency Student<\/span><\/pre>\n
 Support Grant\"?<\/span>\r\n\r\nThrough the Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO), <\/span><\/pre>\n
the government will give out 200,000 yen or 100,000 yen <\/span><\/pre>\n
to needy students during the Coronavirus crisis.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nI received a notice about this grant from <\/span><\/pre>\n
the school office some time ago . <\/span><\/pre>\n
However, I didn't open the email because <\/span><\/pre>\n
I was afraid to find out that I might not be eligible.<\/span><\/pre>\n
 I've been neglecting it for a long time.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nOff the topic of emergency grants, <\/span><\/pre>\n
when I first thought about seeking higher education, <\/span><\/pre>\n
I looked for scholarships that were available to me.<\/span>\r\n\r\nHowever, most of the scholarships were for youth <\/span><\/pre>\n
who left child protection institutions or foster homes.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nI was taken into temporary custody <\/span><\/pre>\n
but was never placed in a facility or foster care.\u00a0<\/span><\/pre>\n
 Although I grew up in an abusive home, <\/span><\/pre>\n
there were no scholarships that I was eligible to apply.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFurthermore, I was not able to take a student <\/span><\/pre>\n
loan because of my parents' income.\u00a0<\/span><\/pre>\n
 In other words, I did not meet the eligibility <\/span><\/pre>\n
requirements as a foster youth or as a low-income <\/span><\/pre>\n
household student.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFinding appropriate scholarship programs was a daunting<\/span><\/pre>\n
 and disappointing task for me. Every time <\/span><\/pre>\n
I looked for financial support, <\/span><\/pre>\n
I was forced to realize that I was falling through <\/span><\/pre>\n
the cracks of strict policies and <\/span><\/pre>\n
regulations set by the system.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nJust before the emergency student loan application deadline,<\/span><\/pre>\n
 I muster up the courage to read the application guidelines.<\/span><\/pre>\n
 I was only able to do this because a friend of mine <\/span><\/pre>\n
who is not from IFCA was willing to read the application <\/span><\/pre>\n
form together with me via video call.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nI was happy to find out that even <\/span><\/pre>\n
I could apply for this particular scholarship.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nReading through the application, <\/span><\/pre>\n
I came across checkboxes such as <\/span><\/pre>\n
\"not being able to receive assistance <\/span><\/pre>\n
from the family while living at home\" <\/span><\/pre>\n
and other similar questions.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nI was pleased to see that the form <\/span><\/pre>\n
recognized the existence of households with challenges.\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nI was also relieved to learn that there were <\/span><\/pre>\n
scholarships that could relate to <\/span><\/pre>\n
my circumstances and needs.<\/span>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nIt's too early to be excited <\/span><\/pre>\n
as the results are not yet in, <\/span><\/pre>\n
but this application form certainly made me happy.\u00a0<\/span><\/pre>\n
